Internship Military Fatigue Management

  • Hybrid
    • Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands
  • Aerospace Operations

Job description

Description
The Royal Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR) is seeking a highly motivated intern to conduct a study on the risks, monitoring, and prevention of fatigue in an operational military context, specifically within the air force. This internship aims to contribute to the development of applied scientific knowledge on mitigating measures to prevent fatigue, considering relevant individual and contextual factors that influence their effectiveness.

The focus of this internship will thus be on mitigating measures to prevent fatigue in military aviation and relevant individual and contextual characteristics that influence the effectiveness of these measures. A literature study will identify several mitigating measures that show promise, the most effective of which can then be further tested in a pilot study. A report will then be written based on any literature findings, but mostly the design of the pilot study, and its results, with the goal of assessing the effectiveness and feasibility of the intervention within an operational military context.

Tasks to be foreseen

  • Get acquainted with fatigue mitigation. This includes mitigation strategies that are currently utilised in the military aviation domain, but may also include novel measures or measures that are used in other domains.

  • Development of a pilot study testing one or more promising fatigue mitigation measures.

  • Write a structured report about the study and its outcomes.

  • Present the outcomes of the study at NLR.

This internship starts around the 1st of September 2025. The duration of this assignment will be approximately 5 months.

Requirements

  • A motivated (Master) student in psychology, or equivalent

  • Good research and analytical skills, and preferably experience with a statistical package.

  • Affinity with research in aviation

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work with colleagues and stakeholders

  • Fulltime (or at least 80%) availability
